War declared

Right up to the declaration of war, life in Pembrokeshire continued more or less as normal. For the majority of people conflict with Germany seemed far away. War was furthermost from their minds.

It was the middle of summer, the sun shining and events were taking place as normal throughout the County.

The annual flower show and sports at the Paddock, Stackpole Court, attracted hundreds of people from the rural community - all turned out in their Sunday best.

Also drawing in the crowds were the sports days at Haverfordwest and Milford Haven, Tenby Horse Show, Pembroke Agricultural Show, Broad Haven floral fete and Goodwick Eisteddfod.

On Tuesday 4th August 1914, during Pembrokeshire County Council's quarterly meeting, members agreed that they would do everything in their power to support the Government.

The meeting continued throughout the day and when it concluded at 5pm it was decided to advertise for volunteers to establish the number of motor cars and drivers available in the County. It was also agreed that these vehicles and their drivers would be placed at the disposal of the Government, if required.

At 7pm on the same day Britain declared war against Germany.
