World War I

The First World War is generally regarded as the bloodiest and most brutal war in human history. It began on the 4th August 1914 and continued until the 11th November 1918 when an Armistice between the Allied forces and Germany was signed.

At the time of the war it was not known as the First World War, but as the Great War, or sometimes the War to end all Wars. The latter was very much incorrect as some 20 years later the Second World War broke out.

Despite being several hundred miles away from the front line, Pembrokeshire was greatly affected by the war. A large number of the soldiers that went off to fight from the County never returned. Herbranston may be the only parish in the country that did not lose at least one of its sons to the carnage.

These pages allow you to find out about the war and how it impacted on Pembrokeshire.
