Spys in Pembrokeshire
There are numerous reports of Spys in Pembrokeshire. Many people report seeing lights at night being used to signal enemy aircraft and there are lots or reports of strangers spreading false information and causing alarm.
During the oil tanks fire Milford Fire Brigade is telephoned and told that their assistance is not required. The call did not come from Pembroke Dock Fire Station which was co-ordinating operations and were desperate for as much help as they could get.
Lord Haw (William Joyce) who broadcast propaganda from Germany in his radio programme: 'Germany Calling' is able to give a running commentary on the oil tank fire and demonstrated great knowledge of Pembroke Dock even down to street names. On one occasion he informed listeners that the Pembroke Dock town clock had stopped and was even able to say at what time it had stopped at. There was obviously someone in the area providing the Germans with information which would have included targets to attack. Joyce himself had lodged in Pembroke Dock before the war and had a holiday flat in Tenby.
