Pembroke Power Station
In the 1960’s the use of electricity was becoming widespread and by the middle of the decade the maximum capacity of the UK’s power stations was almost at its limit.
This led to the searching for a site to locate a new power station capable of meeting the increased demand for electricity. During the 1960’s, Milford Haven was regarded as the centre of the UK oil refining industry, with three refineries and a storage depot. This was one of the reasons why it was decided that the new power station should be located at the Rhoscrowther site, 4 miles west of Pembroke.
The land at Rhoscrowther was acquired and shortly after work began on constructing the power station. In 1968 the power station was completed and production began.
During the 1990's there were proposals to burn orimulsion at the power station, but the plans were scrapped after complaints and protests from local communities. The site closed in 1997 and is not currently occupied.
There is a proposal to develop a gas fired power station on the former Oil Power Station. The proposed new plant will be of the same power capacity (2000 MW) and on a site within the boundary of the original station. RWE N-power have lodged the application with the Department of trade & Industry and a final decision is expected in the near furure.
