Mines & Pits

It is not known exactly where coal was first mined in the County as early accounts point to several different areas. It is likely that during the 16th Century there were coal mines around Hook and Saundersfoot.

The development of the coal industry during the 17th Century saw many more pits opening up around the County. The majority of the coal mines in Pembrokeshire are located in the following areas: Hook and Freystrop; Saundersfoot and Jeffreston; Landshipping; Nolton and Newgale; Broad Haven and Little Haven.
