The Fishing Industry
Over the centuries the inhabitants of the coastal areas of Pembrokeshire have exploited the harvest of the seas. The survival of the County's coastal community depended on a flourishing fishing industry.
There are many harbours and fishing ports found all along the coast from Newport in the North to Saundersfoot in the South.
Tenby was the first place in Pembrokeshire where a fishing industry developed into an important part of the economy. There is evidence of a substantial amount of fish being landed at the port of Tenby in the 17th Century.
Perhaps the most well known and successful of the Pembrokeshire fishing ports is that of Milford Haven. It was hoped that the harbour at Milford would become a profitable transatlantic town, but instead it became a flourishing fishing port with thousands of tons of fish being landed every year.
