Fishing Ports

Being located on a peninsula next to the Atlantic Sea, Pembrokeshire has a long tradition of sea-fairing activities. There is evidence of this found scattered around the county in the form of harbours and quays.

One of the earliest ports located in West Wales was that of Tenby. There is evidence of fish being landed here during the 16th Century when it had a large curved pier which provided shelter to the trawlers.

There are a number of old coastal fishing villages found around the County. Many of these are small rural villages who's community depended on the fishing trade as a source of income. These include Abercastle, Porthgain, Angle, Little Haven, Solva and Saundersoot.

During the 19th Century there were a few ports that developed in to major fishing centres. Tenby was the first to port in the County to have a siginifant amount of fish being landed. However, it is the port of Milford Haven is regarded at the home of Pembrokeshire's fishing industry. At its peak trade Milford had a 950 foot fish market two ice factories, smoking houses and over 40,00 tons of fish being landed.
