Types of Farming

As the Agriculture Industry developed, people discovered that certain types of farming were best suited to particular areas and land conditions. This led to people focusing their farming activities to particular types of farming rather than producing everything.

There are certain areas within the County that are best suited to one particular type of farming. A large number of Pembrokeshire's sheep are found on farms around the Preseli Hills where land is steep and not very fertile.

The West coast of Pembrokeshire is known for being one of only a few places in the whole of Britain were early potatoes can be grown. This is mainly due to the mild climate that the area experiences as the result of being located next to the Atlantic.

The moderate climate and varied landscape of Pembrokeshire allows a wide range of crops and animals to be farmed. The majority of farming in the County has been mixed with dairy, cattle, sheep and arable all being popular.
