Impacts on the Industry

Agriculture is one of the oldest industries to exist in Pembrokeshire and for centuries it was the dominant industry.

The past hundred years has seen several major changes within the agricultural industry.

The introduction of the Milk Marketing Board in the 1930s and Common Agricultural Policy in the 1950s meant that farmers’ incomes were enhanced and made stable.

Milk Quota was introduced in the 1970s and this meant that dairy farmers could only produce a certain amount of milk. This led to more stable prices for farmers but at a cost of limited expansion.

More recently there have been the outbreaks of killer diseases like BSE and Foot and Mouth (FMD) which greatly affected the farmers within the county.
