Railway Area at Scolton

The Railway Area

The area in front of the entrance to the exhibition hall contains a small display showing a signal box and a locomotive.

The Sarnau Signal Box is the original box that was located at Bancyfelin and is one of the finest local examples. The Victorian signal box controlled manually operated gates and a set of signals. It was replaced by automatic gates and television monitors in May 1979. The signal box was purchased by the museum complete with contents, including block telegraphs and remotely operated crossing gates.

The locomotive found on display is the Maenclochog Railway's 0-6-0 ST 'Margaret', which was restored after being found rusting away in and abandoned tin-plate works at Kidwelly. 'Margaret' was built to work on the Narberth Road and Maenclochog Railway, which was constructed by Edward Cropper, owner of the extensive slate quarries at Rosebush in the Preseli Mountains of North Pembrokeshire. The railway was built at Cropper's own expense and ran from the GWR station at Clunderwen to the quarries at Rosebush.
