Dolmans & Cairns

Dolmans, known as Cromlechs in Wales, are megalithic tombs consisting of large stones set in formation and originally covered with earth or more, smaller stones. In many cases the covering has been weathered away leaving only the stone 'skeleton' of the monument.

There are many fine examples of Dolmans found around Pembrokeshire. Perhaps the most famous and impressive of these is Pentre Ifan, which is located on the Preseli Hills.

A Carin is a heap of stones, often specifically deposited to cover a burial and also commonly used to mark the summit of a hill, or the route up a hill. The monument is typical of the Bronze Age period.

Foel Drygarn Cairn

There are several cairns found in the County, the majority of which are located on the Preseli Hills. The most notable of these is the cairns at Foel Drygarn, which form part of a Bronze Age Hillfort.
