Historical Events

There have been many events over the past thousand years that have had an impact on Pembrokeshire.

Here we take a closer look at six of the events that have had significant effects on the people and places in the County.

The first and probably the most significant of these events was the Norman Conquest which took place after William the Conquerer defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The English Civil War also had considerable impacts on the County. The most noticeable was the damaged caused to some of the impressive castles in Pembrokeshire, Haverfordwest being the worst hit.

An impressive claim to fame of the County is that the last invasion to take place in Britain was carried out in Fishguard at the end of the 18th Century. The invasion attempt by 1400 French soldiers were thwarted by local soldiers and volunteers which included a number of women armed with pitchforks.

The Rebecca Riots were unique to West Wales and effected the Counties of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

More recently, the World Wars have taken there toll on the County, with many people lost in battle.
